How To Grow Leafy Greens like spinach, lettuce and swiss chard in autumn

Growing leafy greens like spinach, lettuce, kale, and Swiss chard in autumn is rewarding as these plants thrive in cool temperatures and are relatively easy to manage. Here's how to grow them successfully:

  1. Choose the Right Varieties

Select cool-weather varieties for best results. Some leafy greens are better suited for fall planting:

  • Spinach: 'Bloomsdale' or 'Tyee' varieties.
  • Lettuce: Choose cold-hardy types like romaine, butterhead, or loose-leaf varieties.
  • Kale: Curly kale or varieties like 'Lacinato' (Dinosaur kale).
  • Swiss Chard: Rainbow or Ford hook Giant are popular and resilient choices.
  1. Timing
  • Start in late summer: Begin planting leafy greens in late summer (6-8 weeks before the first expected frost). These crops can withstand light frosts and some, like kale, even become sweeter after frost.
  • Succession planting: Plant every two weeks to stagger your harvests for a continuous supply of fresh greens.
  1. Soil Preparation
  • Well-drained, fertile soil: Leafy greens prefer loose, fertile soil. Add compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil with organic matter.
  • pH level: Ideal soil pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0. Test your soil and amend if necessary.
  • Amend with nitrogen: Leafy greens are heavy nitrogen feeders. Consider adding a nitrogen-rich organic fertilizer like blood meal to the soil.
  1. Planting Process
  • Direct sow or start indoors: Most leafy greens can be direct sown into the garden, but you can also start seeds indoors and transplant them outside after 3-4 weeks.
  • Spacing:
    • Spinach: Sow seeds about 1 inch apart, thin to 3-4 inches apart once seedlings are established.
    • Lettuce: Space seeds 4-6 inches apart, thin or transplant to 6-12 inches depending on the variety.
    • Kale: Space seedlings 12-18 inches apart to give them plenty of room to grow.
    • Swiss Chard: Space seeds or seedlings 6-8 inches apart for compact plants, or 12 inches for larger growth.
  1. Watering
  • Consistent moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Greens like regular watering, especially in dry periods, but avoid overwatering as it can lead to root rot.
  • Mulching: Apply a thin layer of mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  1. Sunlight and Temperature
  • Cooler temperatures: Leafy greens prefer temperatures between 50-70°F (10-21°C). Too much heat can cause lettuce and spinach to bolt (go to seed).
  • Partial shade: In warmer climates, providing afternoon shade will help prevent bolting.
  1. Protection from Pests
  • Use row covers: To prevent common pests like aphids, cabbage worms, and slugs, consider covering your greens with lightweight row covers.
  • Companion planting: Planting garlic, onions, or marigolds nearby can help deter pests.
  1. Harvesting
  • Cut-and-come-again: For lettuce, spinach, and Swiss chard, you can harvest individual leaves as needed. This method allows the plant to continue producing.
  • Kale: Harvest the outer leaves first, leaving the central growing point to produce more leaves.
  • Timing: Harvest greens before they reach full maturity for the best flavour and tenderness.
  1. Frost Protection (if necessary)

If frost is expected, consider using row covers, cold frames, or cloches to protect the plants. Many leafy greens (especially kale and Swiss chard) can survive light frosts and even taste better after exposure to cold.

By following these steps, you’ll have a continuous supply of fresh, healthy greens throughout autumn!
